Romans 15:13 and Ephesians 1:15 -23

I am often intrigued by how many of us long for power when power actually belongs to God. He may delegate power and authority to us to overcome things in the world and this only as given by the Holy Spirit. When you look at creation one sees the enormous power that God has to create,to   balance and to enable life to continue. It seems as if when humans take power into their own hands we experience the consequences of this. Debbie was asked by a young child once who was afraid of the the power of the devil and he couldn’t sleep well. She answered so profoundly by asking the child as she looked over the oceans and the mountains – Who made the sea and who made the mountains and who made you ? And what has the devil ever made ?

Isaiah 40:26  Who created all these? Because of His great power and mighty strength not one of them is missing (stars).

I want to therefore explore the Power of the Holy Spirit in a very authentic way this morning. Power dunamis – dynamic and also dynamite.

We are going to look at this in three ways with a lot of inspiration from one of the great preachers of the 19th century and a good one to read by the way – Charles Spurgeon – 17th June 1855 at New Park Street Chapel in Southwark.

The New Park Street Chapel was a Reformed Baptist church in Southwark in London built in 1833. The fellowship began worshipping together in 1650. Its first pastor was William Rider, and many notable others have filled the position since, including Benjamin Keach, Dr. John Gill, Dr. John Rippon, and C. H. Spurgeon.

The outward and visible display of power.

The inward spiritual manifestation of the power the Holy Spirit

The future and the power of the Holy Spirit.

1. The outward visible displays of the Holy Spirit’s power.

There is a visible image of the invisible all around us every single day. It is evident that a spiritual power way bigger than ourselves holds everything together, creates the seasons and the spring flowers, rain and warmth, sun etc.. There is a beautiful hymn that I would love to sing one day which says – We plough the fields and scatter the good seed on the land, but it is fed and watered by God’s Almighty hand… all good gifts around us are sent from heaven above… so thank the Lord…O thank the Lord for all his love…Hymn 629 written by a German Matthias Cladius.

Jeremiah 10: 12 But God made the earth by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.

The Holy Spirit hovered over the waters and was there from the powerful moment of creation Genesis 1:2. We so often attach a very different idea or understanding of who the Holy Spirit, but we need to remember that he is the very person of the Godhead three in One. Ruach in Hebrew and Pneuma in Greek – breathe or breathing. – the power within Him.

Every single being is the creation of the Spirit and we are breathed into when we are born not just with oxygen but we have life because of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus was born into this earth as we know from scripture through Mary his mother and the Holy Spirit. Divine conception. Luke 1:35

Power is not anything more than the outward visible display of almighty God wherever we may find it on earth and it is seen all around us. We cannot exist without the almighty power of God controlling the universe. You might ask as to why there is so much chaos on earth and the simple answer to this is it is when humanity tries to take power in an abusive way into their own hands.

2. The Spiritual manifestaion of the Power of the Holy Spirit.

This can be clearly seen throughout the Old Testament through the hand of God rescuing humanity, enabling them to have provision, turning things around, guiding them through the darkest times of history and bringing them through. But more than this are the tangible miracles and clear manifestations of healings and even more so the transformation of a human heart.Last week we spoke about the post resurrection and post pentecostal followers of Jesus empowered and transformed.

One of the most powerful manifestations of the Spirit can be seen in the resurrection of Jesus 1 Peter 3:18 He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit.

The power that is at work in us through the Holy Spirit is often so clear not so much in the gifts although these are vital, but more so in the fruit – love joy peace patience, kindness goodness gentleness, faithfulness and self control Galatians 5:22 This for me is a deep manifestaion of the Holy Spirit in a human being and we may sin and fall short, but we do need to allow this manifestation to be evident more and more.

Not just this but also the works of grace and mercy and most importantly love. We also have power from above to understand the word of the Lord – leads us into all truth and the truth sets us free.

The gifts are equally important and the Hoy Spirit gives them for the “common good”. I love this because it’s not for the good of ourselves but for the common good. It’s a very humbling thing to have a gift and it’s for action and not for reaction. We use them as the Holy Spirit directs us and not for a show. There are way too many shows going on in our world right now and we need to be careful. Listen to this very carefully :

1 Corinthians 12: 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,* and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.

3. Last but not least the future and the power of the Holy Spirit.

We have seen as we studied the different characters in the book of acts the remarkable power of the Holy Spirit in healings and even raising people from the dead – Dorcas and Enticus. Paul has a good go at those who deny the power of the Holy Spirit – 2 Timothy 3:5 “Having a from of godliness but denying it’s power.”

I really believe that our future as Christians will be in the fact that many young people are searching for spiritual truth and sadly are trying to find it in all the wrong places. We have to give them an authentic real understanding of their future entertwined by the power of the Holy Spirit.

There is a power over our hearts as humans which only the Lord can do – guard your hearts because it is the wellspring of life. Proverbs 4:23

Ephesians 3: 14 -20  – strengthen you with power in your inner being. The place that noone alse can touch. The place that holds the future not just on earth but also in heaven. The place that needs to be guarded.

Our stubborn wills can so often and easily get in the way of the Holy Spirit – Ephesians  dont’ walk in the way of love (negatively) but walk in the way of love (positively)

It’s quite clear that as Christians we have the privelege in a very humble way to ask for power from above and the Lord’s response is very clear from Ephesians 1: 19,20 the same power that raised Jesus from the dead.

A power that enables us to be a part of the future plans and purposes of the Lord. A power that asks for transformation and change, protection and upliftment and a different outcome to the one that we see. A future that will be a blessing for our children and our children’s children. A glorious time where the pouring out of God’s Spirit in the last days whenever that may be. Joel 2:28,29.

The future power of the Holy Spirit is a promise of the resurrection of the dead. Romans 8:28 (nothing can seperate us from the Love of God) and where O death is your sting and 1 Cor 15: 35 58.

The power of the Holy Spirit can literally change everything not just here on earth but into the future. Your future may look really challenging but remember that no matter how hard it is there is a future that the Holy Spirit is paving out for you reay and prepared and all you have to do is accept and receive that future and enable his manifest power to work in your heart.

Know the hope to which he has called you. Ephesians 1:18. Your are sealed with the Holy Spirit 2 Cor 1:22

1 Cor 2: 9 However, as it is written:

No eye has seen no ear has heard no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him.

10but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit.

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.14The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to them, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15The spiritual person makes judgments about all things, but they themselves are not subject to any persons judgment:

16 For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?

But we have the mind of Christ.
