Believe series – Session 3 Salvation

Believe Series session 3 Salvation

Key idea: I believe a person comes into a right relationship with God by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ

Key verse : Ephesians 2:8.9

For it is by grace that you have been saved through faith and this not from yourselves, it is a free gift of God not by works so that no one can boast.

INTRODUCTION

Martin Luther – 1517 Professor at Wittenburg university -Protestant reformation  and his 99 thesis nailed to the Wittenburg church in opposition to indulgences (paying for your salvation) to Justification by grace through faith and not works (Eph 2:8,9) – Grace alone – Five solas :

Soli Deo Gloria – to the Glory of God alone

Solus Christus – Christ alone

Sola Scriptura – scripture alone

Sola fida – faith alone

Sola Gratia – Grace alone

Wesley 1738 heart strangely warmed

Grace alone is given through Christ – forgiveness

Prevenient grace – given before you were born

Justifying grace – available for everyone –when you accept Jesus as your Lord and saviour.

Sanctifying grace – When we focus on God instead of ourselves we gain the Holy Spirit who helps us to act more like Jesus.

All people need to be saved

All people can be saved

All people may know that they are saved

All people may be saved to the uttermost.

The bottom line with all of this is the blessing of knowing God’s deep love for humankind that he would want a relationship with you and me.

  1. Genesis 2 and 3 Where the story begins.

It is a story of love, provision and boundaries which ultimately were broken. It could have ended there but we see God’s grace in allowing a way out for Adam and Eve(Men and woman) and continuing the relationship with them.

  1. Abraham and Isaac genesis22: 1-18

Sacrificial offering of a son and the ram as an offering in place of his son. The test of obedience and the offer of Grace.

  1. Moses and Passover – Exodus 11: 1 -12:31

In captivity in Egypt through the 10 plagues and the final one of the potential possibility of the first born children dying, God again provides a way out – blood on the doorpost and the angel of death Passes over the houses of the Israelites and they escape through the parting of the sea into a deep test of a dessert for 40 years !!!!

  1. THE GRACE FACTOR 1300 years pass by after Abraham and God raises up a prophet called Isaiah in the middle of another exile and this time he declares that their will be a Saviour – the Messiah and he describes him as the suffering servant – Isaiah 52:13 – 53:12 and then 200 years after Isaac is spared by God and 1500 years after he spares them in Egypt and 700 years after Isaiah prophesied about the suffering servant Jesus Christ dies to save the world and he is THE GRACE FACTOR.
  2. John 3: 16 For God so loved that he gave – profound theology in itself. We have a way out and it is called ATONEMENT and it has been there right from inception. It is not plan B but plan A
  3. Ephesians 2:8,9

For it is by grace – the grace factor reminds us today that we are only able to be forgiven and find forgiveness and restoration because Jesus has died on the cross and atoned for us so that we can have a deep loving relationship with the Father.

that you have been saved – there is a need in all of us not to be saved so that we can just go to heaven heaven, but saved rather so that we can be active on earth.

through faith – it is a faith step Hebrews 11: sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

and this not from yourselves – this can’t be bought or earned or manipulated

it is a free gift of God – these for me are the most powerful words in the bible – FREE GIFT. Galatians 5: 1 It is for freedom Christ has set us free stand firm then and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yolk of slavery.

not by works so that no one can boast. Both Luther Calvin and Wesley and the protestant reformers got this and I trust that we get this today.

What is your response ?

ROMANS 5:20 The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, 21 so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
