Patience

James 5:7-12

7 Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. 8 You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. 9 Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door! 10 Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy. 12 Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned.

Key verse: ”Whoever is patient has great understanding, but one who is quick-tempered displays folly.” Proverbs 14:29

Key idea: “I am slow to anger and endure patiently under the unavoidable pressures of life.”

Carl’s testimony

How do you learn patience by experiencing impatience?

Patience is defined as waiting without complaint. I am not good at this!!!

To be patient is to find yourself going through discomfort without complaining. Again I fail at this!!!!

  1. Different kinds of patience.

Someone who irritates you!!! Fail

Boredom – I seriously do not have this challenge but maybe some do!!!! How is it possible to be bored in a world that has so much for us to receive?

Suffering – physical emotional or spiritual – Yes I am sure we can all relate to this now!!!

  1. To complain to God is appropriate in the Bible – let’s have a look at some examples:

Psalm 10:1, 44:24,142:2, 88:15 -18

  1. Why is patience so jolly difficult?

The egocentric predicament – being aware immediately of your thoughts and feelings which you need to get under control – do you remember self-control and Trevor and Pierre?

Seeing things from other people’s perspectives – two moons in my moccasins

Nothing develops patience like experience – fathering three boys.

  1. God and patience.

But you Lord are a compassionate and gracious Father, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness. Psalm 86:15

Timing with God is different to ours. With the Lord a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years is like a day… he is patient with you. 2 Peter 3: 1 -18

God is not impulsive – waiting Romans 9:22

God develops refines stretches and grows us.

  1. In patience we need to learn to control our anger

Listen carefully to what the Word says about patience and controlling anger :

Proverbs 14:29 Whoever is patient has great understanding, but one who is quick-tempered displays folly.

Proverbs 15:18 A hot tempered person stirs up conflict, but one who is patient calms a quarrel.

Prov 16:32 Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.

Proverbs 19:11 A person wisdom yields patience; it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense.

Proverbs 25:15 Through patience a ruler can be persuaded.

Be patient and trust the Lord. Don’t let it bother you when all goes well for those who do sinful things!!!

James talks about the challenges of taming the tongue as we know:

  1. James 1: 19

Quick to listen – listen – consider another more significant than yourself. Phil 2:3

Slow to speak – wait. Speaking past our initial response. Prov 10:18. Seek the Lord for wisdom and discernment. It will be the last thing you will feel like doing but it will save your butt!!!

Slow to become angry – respond. Let your words be full of grace – Ephesians 4:29. These can be tender but also tough and firm if necessary.

Ensure that there is a space between stimulus and response Steven Covey and his Harley Davidson ride.

If there is anyone in scripture who could teach us a few thigs about patience its Job who went through so many challenges in his life and came through it still following the Lord.

2 Cor 1:3 -4

Key idea: I am slow to anger and endure patiently under the unavoidable pressures of life.
