Matthew 5:1-16

Our family had the most awesome opprtunity in 2018 of going to Israel and part of the trip was to go to the mount of Beatitudes. It’s a beautiful ride through the fertile erea of the shores of the sea of Galillee and then eventually you climb up to this beautiful church which overlooks the whole of Israel and the sea of Galilee. We got out of our car and walked together to the church and through a beautiful garden with the Beatitudes written on stones and water features all around. The wind was blowing quite strongly up from the sea and it was hot so it was quite a relief. We wnt into the little church which has windows allowing the wind to blow through the church and Deb and I sat down with Matthew Luke Joel and Melissa and we began to read the sermon on the mount. It was such a beautifully spiritual moment that we all began to weep as we read this amazing teaching from Jesus which outlines to the characteristics that a disciple of Jesus should have. As the wind blew we felt the Holy Spirit entertwined with these powerful words and reminding us of a lifestyle of being a Christ follower as opposed to a religious person.

And so I want to take you up that mountain again today and don’t just listen to the word but allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you deep down in your soul. We have spoken about water that allows us never to thirst again. We have shared on the storms of life and how Jesus is in the middle of the storm calming it down. We have share about paralysis and how this can keep us from the very thing that the Lord wants us to be and do, and now today I want to guide you into an understanding of what it means to be salt and light.

In a world where corruption and darkness are rife, we are called out at such a time as this to be salt and light and I trust that I will be able to help you to understand what this means with a little help from some wonderful theologians like David Guzik, Dion Forster and George Irvine.

1. The character of those in the kingdom.

The beatitudes are the character qualities that we need to have

But this also means that we will be persecuted. No aplause from the world.

We can either withdraw or we can discover the very thing that God wants us to be and that is to be salt and light in the world.

Being called to sit with barbed wire around me and a candle in peaceful protest against the riots and violence in Port Elizabeth in 1985 as a young minister. We are called to be peacemakers maybe not in the same way, but to stand in the gap between fighting and violence.

We cannot withdraw especially at a time likes this in covid and the biggest temptation of all is to isolate ourselves to the extent of having no interaction with others.

We are in this world to be a blessing to others – salt and light.

2. What does it mean to be salt ?

We all know the sayings – He/she is worth their weight in salt. That person is just the salt of the earth. But what exactly does Jesus mean when he says “You are the salt of the earth?”

We need to count it a privelege for the Lord to refer to us as the dalt of the earth. This means that we have :

a. Value -Salt was extremely important in the period, and ancient communities knew that salt was a requirement of life. Our family Moto is to “add value wherever we are!”

Salt had value in the early days so much so that soldiers were paid in salt.

Salary comes from the Latin word salarium, which also means “salary” and has the root sal, or “salt.” In ancient Rome, it specifically meant the amount of money allotted to a Roman soldier.

b. Preserve – biltong and fish – no fridges or ice.

We need to be a preserving influence in enabling the world to be better and not worst. We need to preserve the teaching of the Lord to our children and our children’s children.

Christians should have a preserving influence on their culture.

c. Flavour – going to a great restaurant and the joy of great food with good flavour. We are called to add flavour to the people that we are with and to bring Life in all it’s fullness.

Adding to the community – a blessing of flavour wherever we go. Liberty and Basson – what a blessing they are to the community.

d. Keep it’s saltiness ?

I am not sure if salt can lose it’s saltiness NaCl but it may lose it’s saltiness due to impurities.

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavour, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.”

If the salt loses its flavor…it is then good for nothing: Salt must keep its “saltiness” to be of any value. When it is no good as salt, it is trampled under foot. In the same way, too many Christians lose their “flavour” and become mixed up with impurities and we need to come before the Lord and allow for him to deal with some of these areas so that we can be good salt for our communities.

3. Light

Jesus says that “you are the light.”

a. Compliment and responsibility. This is such a compliment that the Lord would allow us to be alligned with HIM as the Light of the world to be light in the world. We are called to shine like stars in the universe. Phil 2:15

I am the light of the world – the Lord

You are the light of the world. Be light.

b. We need to be light in our spirit’s as well. Be alive and not miserable. Bring joy, hope love and lightness.

c. Bring light – reflect the Glory and the Presence of Almighty God in very dark areas in our world. You need to bring light into the darkest of situations.

d. Don’t put a bowl over the light. We need to bew aware that we can be so full of light on the exterior but when we find ourselves in the world our light is hidden under a bowl. Don’t hide the Light that God has given to you !!! There is no other light but you in Christ.

The work that the Lord does is done through you and me as we become a light for the world – beacon.

Declaration of a standard to live up to. Don’t hide it.

Simple and steady light that brings God glory.

To live out the life of Christ, we need to be salt and light.

A guide to my way – not shining it in their eyes but rather giving direction.

Lamp stand – make it more visible.

e. The light that shines in the house – in your house how much light is shining in your own home !!!

Keith Green

Gender based violence, churches and stuff going on that the world is watching but more than that the challenges that we need to be finding ways to heal through the stuff that needs to dealt with when the doors shut of our homes.

What is going on behind those doors ???The light and the salt must start at home. We need to be held accountable by those that live in our homes whoever they may be.

f. The Lord get’s the Glory not us !!!“that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. It’s not just for us but it’s for those that are observing.

Distinction – the world is rotting and if the church is rotting too then we are in trouble.

We need to be light in a dark world and we need to be distinctive.

Pray and conclusion :

Be light and salt. Shine like stars in the universe.

Ephesians 5(Ep 5:8-16)

8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10and find out what pleases the Lord. 11Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said:

Wake up, O sleeper,

rise from the dead,

and Christ will shine on you.

15Be very careful, then, how you live”not as unwise but as wise, 16making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
